About the language

  • Urdu is the official language of Pakistan and of some states and union territories in India, more precisely of Bihar, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal. It is the first language of about 65 million of people and the second of 94 million.
  • The word Urdu comes from the Turkic word “ordu” wich means “army” but has been translated into “horde” in English. The word Urdu was first used by the poet Ghulam Hamadani Mushafi around 1780. Earlier, Urdu was known as Hindi and was also called Hindavi and Dehlavi; it was promoted in British India by British policies and was made co-official language along with English in 1837.
