Bosnians in Birmingham

Bosnia and Herzegovina suffered a civil war from 1992 to 1995, as a result of the breakup of Yugoslavia. The conflict involved the Serbs, the Bosnians and the Croatians. During the war, many civilians decided to flee their homeland to start a new life in another country, away from death. Even though the United Kingdom was not the, preferred destination, many Bosnians immigrated to Great Britain during the conflict and stayed there even after the signature of the General Framework Agreement for Peace – also known as the Dayton Agreement.

Over the last 20 years, Bosnians have learnt to adapt and to fit in the British society. Nowadays, children or grandchildren of those immigrants speak perfect English and are most of the time completely bilingual. It is however different for the elderly. The older you are, the harder it is to learn a new language; therefore, elder Bosnians often struggle with the English language and need assistance.

As it is the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham welcomes many Bosnian families and Bosnian interpreters are often request to assist them. All of the interpreters working at BTA are trained on a regular basis to perfectly meet your requirements. Besides, they are qualified to interpret in situations such as business meetings, doctor appointments, asylum interviews, job interviews, conferences.

Bosnian Language

The Bosnian language is a variation of Serbo-Croatian, the official language in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also a minority language in Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Croatia and in Kosovo, whose status is controversial – as a reminder, Kosovo is a partially recognised country which has declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 but which has not received all the diplomatic recognitions as an independent state.

Bosnian Etiquette

SHOES – As many Bosnians are Muslims, it is appropriate to take off your shoes before entering the house of the person who invited you. Your host will provide slippers.

TITLES – Titles are important in initial meetings. Mr., Mrs., or Ms. followed by the person’s title and their surname is commonly used. Mr. in Bosnian is Gospodin and Mrs. is Gospodja.

NEGOCIATIONS – Bargaining is very common and decisions are not made as fast as one may expect. This is one of the characteristics of the Bosnian way of doing business.

CONVERSATION – It is common to hear people speaking in loud voices and becoming animated during conversations.  This usually does not signify anger; people just tend to be expressive.

Bosnia?

Did you know that Bosnia and Herzegovina is often simply called Bosnia and its inhabitants are called Bosnians? Indeed, the region of Bosnia is the most important region of the country and its borders with Herzegovina are not clearly defined. Bosnians represent the major ethnic group of Bosnia and Herzegovina and no distinction is made between people from Bosnia and from Herzegovina. They share Bosnian as their common tongue.
